Random Blog: A Special Day

I remember the 29th of March, 2014 like it was yesterday. Since it was the day after my 18th birthday, I was finding it hard to focus on my last set of exams in high school. I had also recently finished watching the gruesome series of How to Get Rejected from Colleges Five Times in A Row. After binge-watching those episodes, I needed a break from my daily routine. The only university I hadn't heard back from was my dream school. Although i was still hopeful, I had been told not to keep my expectations too high.

This brings me to the day of my last decision letter. I woke up and instinctively scrolled through my inbox. It was a morning ritual that rarely brought me any joy, but it had to be done. I walked into to my mom's room without saying a word. She tried to cheer me up by putting on some music, but I was in no mood to choose the song. She put it on anyway and went to the balcony to water the plants. I switched on my laptop and started scrolling through Facebook and Twitter. After a couple of minutes, I saw a post that had a picture of acceptance letters from the university I hadn't heard back from. Had they shipped out the decision letters already? Why hadn't I got mine yet? Even though I hadn't gotten a letter, why didn’t the school email me about it?

I quickly checked my username and password for my account and logged on to the university’s  portal. To my surprise, there was a letter.

I clicked on it and starting reading.

It was a sample acceptance letter. It read “Congratulations!  You have been accepted to ..." Wait a second, a sample acceptance letter?

I read it again. It wasn't a sample acceptance letter. It was an acceptance letter with my name on it. It was my acceptance letter. I had gotten into my dream school - the University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business.

I couldn't hold it in and started shouting in excitement. My mom came rushing inside thinking I had fallen down or hurt myself.

Without saying a word about my acceptance letter, I sat her down and told her to look at my screen.
She sat down, looked at my screen, and couldn't say a word...

The 29th of March, 2014 was a day I will never forget. It was the day I got into the University of Southern California - my dream school.

  4. Hi Raghav:

I had a similar experience to you in terms of how nervous I was before receiving an acceptance letter to University of Southern California. Personally, the first time I was informed of whether I had been accepted to University of Southern California was through email when they had sent me a link to figure out my student accommodation as a freshman, which caused me to then log on my portal and see that I had been accepted to my dream school as well.

I truly enjoyed reading your random post.

  5. Hi Raghav! Wow. You're story really excites me and brings me back to my memory of opening up my acceptance letter from USC. Thank you so much for reminding me of how incredibly blessed we are for attending the best school in the world. I am sometimes still in disbelief when I walk across our sunshiny campus. I am so proud of you for achieving your dream and so proud of all of us! Fight on.

  7. Raghav,

I actually got chills reading this post! The day I got accepted to USC will forever be one of my favorite days in my entire life. The moment I ripped open my acceptance letter, I collapsed on the floor and cried so many tears of joy that my mom thought I got denied. I'm glad all of us can share in that special day having our own unique experiences :)

  8. Hi Raghav,
I loved your post because I had a really similar experience!
I never got an acceptance letter because they messed up my address and therefore it never arrived! The funniest thing was that I got admitted to Bocconi university in Italy and while I was checking out the deadline for the payment of the first rate, I discovered I was admitted to WBB and therefore Marshall. I rushed downstairs where my dad was waiting for me to tell him when and how much he had to pay and I immediately told him "the good news is that you don't have to pay that money anymore, the sad one is that now you have to pay 80$ because I was admitted to WBB". I think it was the best of my life but not as fun for my dad!

  9. Hey Raghav,

I completely remember the moment I got into USC as well! Just like you, I could not believe that it was an acceptance letter. Coming home from a long day, I was just dejected and expecting more rejection letters. But opening the package up it really hit me that I got accepted into one of my dream schools. It was a great post!

A World We Dare to Imagine

Breaking The 3rd Degree Connection Why do we love our family? Why do we like our friends? Why do we ignore strangers? While reading the quote on equality by Jacqueline Novogratz, I wondered why we treat people differently. If we truly believe that all men are created equal, what’s stopping us from treating each other with the same respect we give our family? This incongruence may stem from the notion “you are different than me.” I want to create a world in which we treat people as family. What Is Family?  For a moment, think about this fact. Biologically speaking, we are all related. We each share DNA that can be traced back to common ancestors 1,000 years ago, which makes us all distant cousins. Simply thinking about a stranger as a relative can instantly create a bond that may naturally release emotions of love and respect, instead of judgment and suspicion. What Do I Know? Treat people as if they’re your distant relatives. I was subtly introduced to this idea while I ...

Born on Third Base

Writing Style  Before I share my thoughts on Born on Third Base by Chuck Collins, I would like to briefly praise the author’s writing style. Unlike Kurt Timmermeister, the author of Growing a Farmer, Chuck is clearly an avid writer who uses several techniques from business writing. He begins each chapter with a thought provoking quote, uses subheadings to introduce new ideas, and writes in plain English. Moreover, the overall structure is especially helpful to stay on track while reading this rather dense book. What I Thought In my opinion, Chuck’s invitation to the wealthiest citizens to recommit their wealth to social good is extremely strategic. I find it ironic that some billionaires are more powerful than entire countries. Yet, it’s these one-percenters that Chuck will influence through his book by sharing his story with his peers. Not only has he voiced his own opinion about social inequality but has described tangible ways for the one-percenters to join his mission to ...

Apple To Google (Real Quick)

Last month, I was about to do something that none of my friends would approve. They thought I was going to make the big mistake of my college career. A friend even threatened to never message me again. Yet, I did it anyway - I gave up my iPhone and got a Google Pixel 2XL. This blog post is for those of you who think they're knees deep in the Apple ecosystem and think there's no way out. It's for those trailblazers who want to try something new. Allow me to share my reasons to switch out of Apple, and on to Google. Top 6 Reasons to Switch From iPhone X to Google Pixel 2XL 1.
