I remember the 29th of March, 2014 like it was yesterday. Since it was the day after my 18th birthday, I was finding it hard to focus on my last set of exams in high school. I had also recently finished watching the gruesome series of How to Get Rejected from Colleges Five Times in A Row. After binge-watching those episodes, I needed a break from my daily routine. The only university I hadn't heard back from was my dream school. Although i was still hopeful, I had been told not to keep my expectations too high.
This brings me to the day of my last decision letter. I woke up and instinctively scrolled through my inbox. It was a morning ritual that rarely brought me any joy, but it had to be done. I walked into to my mom's room without saying a word. She tried to cheer me up by putting on some music, but I was in no mood to choose the song. She put it on anyway and went to the balcony to water the plants. I switched on my laptop and started scrolling through Facebook and Twitter. After a couple of minutes, I saw a post that had a picture of acceptance letters from the university I hadn't heard back from. Had they shipped out the decision letters already? Why hadn't I got mine yet? Even though I hadn't gotten a letter, why didn’t the school email me about it? I quickly checked my username and password for my account and logged on to the university’s portal. To my surprise, there was a letter.
I clicked on it and starting reading.
It was a sample acceptance letter. It read “Congratulations! You have been accepted to ..." Wait a second, a sample acceptance letter?
I read it again. It wasn't a sample acceptance letter. It was an acceptance letter with my name on it. It was my acceptance letter. I had gotten into my dream school - the University of Southern California, Marshall School of Business.
I couldn't hold it in and started shouting in excitement. My mom came rushing inside thinking I had fallen down or hurt myself.
Without saying a word about my acceptance letter, I sat her down and told her to look at my screen.
She sat down, looked at my screen, and couldn't say a word...
The 29th of March, 2014 was a day I will never forget. It was the day I got into the University of Southern California - my dream school.
Hi Raghav! I really enjoyed reading this story! I felt like I was in the room, and it also reminded me of finding out that I was accepted into USC while walking around a Best Buy. I think that getting into your dream school is one of the best feelings in the world.
ReplyDeleteYo Raghav I love this story man. Reminds me of waiting for my own letters. I found out about my acceptace at Ultra Music Festival in Miami so its cool to hear other stories as well.
ReplyDeleteHey,
ReplyDeleteThis is a awesome story. That is like my experience, I still remember thinking that the letter wasn't real and realizing that it was.
Hi Raghav:
ReplyDeleteI had a similar experience to you in terms of how nervous I was before receiving an acceptance letter to University of Southern California. Personally, the first time I was informed of whether I had been accepted to University of Southern California was through email when they had sent me a link to figure out my student accommodation as a freshman, which caused me to then log on my portal and see that I had been accepted to my dream school as well.
I truly enjoyed reading your random post.
Hi Raghav! Wow. You're story really excites me and brings me back to my memory of opening up my acceptance letter from USC. Thank you so much for reminding me of how incredibly blessed we are for attending the best school in the world. I am sometimes still in disbelief when I walk across our sunshiny campus. I am so proud of you for achieving your dream and so proud of all of us! Fight on.
ReplyDeleteRaghav,
ReplyDeleteWe all have been there - the anxious waiting before logging into the portal to eventually find out that you are accepted to your dream school. This article brings back memories!
Raghav,
ReplyDeleteI actually got chills reading this post! The day I got accepted to USC will forever be one of my favorite days in my entire life. The moment I ripped open my acceptance letter, I collapsed on the floor and cried so many tears of joy that my mom thought I got denied. I'm glad all of us can share in that special day having our own unique experiences :)
Hi Raghav,
ReplyDeleteI loved your post because I had a really similar experience!
I never got an acceptance letter because they messed up my address and therefore it never arrived! The funniest thing was that I got admitted to Bocconi university in Italy and while I was checking out the deadline for the payment of the first rate, I discovered I was admitted to WBB and therefore Marshall. I rushed downstairs where my dad was waiting for me to tell him when and how much he had to pay and I immediately told him "the good news is that you don't have to pay that money anymore, the sad one is that now you have to pay 80$ because I was admitted to WBB". I think it was the best of my life but not as fun for my dad!
Hey Raghav,
ReplyDeleteI completely remember the moment I got into USC as well! Just like you, I could not believe that it was an acceptance letter. Coming home from a long day, I was just dejected and expecting more rejection letters. But opening the package up it really hit me that I got accepted into one of my dream schools. It was a great post!
